Culture and customs

This will be an American-Norwegian wedding, so you can expect the day to be different from both Norwegian and American weddings. We are trying to plan it with the best from both worlds, and are picking our favorite traditions. For our international guests we hope to give you a cultural experience, with a traditional Norwegian church service and local food. As you might have deducted from this page, a lot will be said and done in English, but there will be translation for parts of the celebration.

Some of the traditions we have decided to follow:
- In Norway the engaged couple wear matching gold bands throughout their engagement and continue using them as their wedding bands from the wedding day.
- Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.
- An American rehearsal dinner for the bridal party and immediate family.
- A maid of honor and best man, but no additional bridesmaids and groomsmen, as is Norwegian tradition.
- Thank you notes with pictures, sent after the wedding.
- A dessert buffet - this is Sunnmøre after all!
- There will also be a reception in Georgia when we get there next Christmas.

And some we will skip:
- A diamond engagement ring.
- The bouquet and garter toss.
- Flower girls and ring bearer.
- Unpacking gifts at the reception.
